Hepatitis C is a viral infection of the liver. It occurs as a result of a virus. The illness can have long-term effects, and in extreme cases can cause long-term life-threatening damage to the liver, causing a person to lose effective function of the organ. It is contracted through coming into contact with an infected person’s blood, through having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing toothbrushes and razors, and through sharing drug needles. It can also be passed on from a mother to her unborn baby (if the mother is infected). It is estimated that 50% of people who inject drugs have hepatitis C.
Symptoms of hepatitis C include fever and high temperature, flu-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite and stomach cramps. When such symptoms do occur, they are often mistaken for another more common condition such as flu.
If treated upon discovery, many people make a successful recovery to full health from hepatitis C. Many insurers offer cover for people with hepatitis C. This does however depend on the severity of your condition and whether symptoms have given you any other associated health complications (in relation to your liver). If you have recovered from hepatitis C with no consequent liver failure or damage, you are likely to be accepted on standard terms.
As many people recover from hepatitis C with no further health complications, cover is generally standard and many insurers will accept applications for hepatitis C life insurance. Depending on your circumstances however, some companies may exercise caution when considering an application. All insurers have to underwrite applications they receive from customers looking for hepatitis C life insurance, and need to assess their level of risk. If you have suffered from severe liver failure as a result of hepatitis C, you may find it more challenging to secure cover from an insurer. This is where iLL can help you find the right insurer that will accept your application for life insurance.
If you have suffered from hepatitis C in the past, but have since recovered and have had no severe complications to your liver or other organs, you should be eligible for life insurance cover at standard rates. This will however depend on the severity of your hepatitis C, where you contracted the infection, your current viral load, and especially whether you contracted hepatitis C through drug use and infected needles. An insurer will assess your overall level of risk. If you have contracted hepatitis C due to drug use and/or have had severe complications with your liver as a result of the condition, you may be offered cover with higher premiums.
You may find that a loading fee is applied to your policy. This is an increase on the price you pay as a premium, depending on your level of risk to an insurer. For example, if you have struggled with liver complications due to severe hepatitis C, and you continue to need medications or treatment, an insurer may take the view that there is a greater likelihood of you making a claim to an insurance company in future. A loading fee may be applied to cover this risk.
